A Reported HbA1c Value is Only Part of the Story.
As patient populations become increasingly diverse, laboratories are more likely to encounter hemoglobin variants and elevated HbF that may affect HbA1c measurement. Understanding how different HbA1c methodologies perform in the presence of hemoglobin variants and elevated HbF is essential for ensuring accurate results and supporting quality patient care. Many HbA1c methods provide only a numerical result. Chromatographic review can provide additional information, revealing abnormal peak patterns, variant hemoglobins, and other factors that may help laboratories recognize potential analytical issues before results are reported
What You Will Learn
- Principles, strengths, and limitations of major HbA1c testing methodologies
- The role of ion-exchange HPLC in hemoglobin separation
- Why hemoglobin variant detection matters clinically
- How common variants and elevated HbF can affect HbA1c results
- The growing relevance of variants in increasingly diverse patient populations
- How chromatograms can reveal unexpected hemoglobin patterns
- Lessons from real-world case studies
Join us for an educational webinar exploring the science behind HbA1c testing and why methodology matters when laboratories encounter hemoglobin variants, elevated fetal hemoglobin (HbF), and other potential interferences.
During this webinar, NGSP Steering Committee Member Dr. Kuanysh Kabytaev will explain the strengths and limitations of major HbA1c testing methodologies, with particular focus on the value of hemoglobin separation technologies and chromatographic review.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe strength and limitations of A1c methodologies.
- Understand the importance detecting of hemoglobin variants in A1c testing
- Demonstrate the value of a chromatogram with real world case studies.
